Intek Precision was having a problem where the backup batteries used in Mitsubishi MR-J2 servo drives of their newer Mazak CNC lathes and mills kept dying. They were frustrated because the replacement batteries we an expensive non-standard item.
They requested that we design a replacement for the lithium batteries that could work with ordinary alkaline AA cells. One of the key requirements was that the replacement still behave like the stock Lithium battery and only cause the low battery alarm to trigger if the batteries are actually low.
We designed and fabricated a voltage regulator board. Based on the measured current draw at the servo drive, we anticipate that the alkaline batteries should last at least 3 years with the machine powered off the whole time. Battery lifetime should be significantly longer if the machine is turned on regularly and isn’t discharging the batteries continuously.
Intek Precision was very satisfied with the performance of the battery replacement and encouraged us to market it to a wider audience. Based on their feedback, we have launched cncbatteries.com where third party customers can purchase our Lithium battery replacement solution.
